How many times a day do you look at your cell phone? I hate to admit it, but I’m addicted to my phone. I suffer from FOMO, also known as Fear Of Missing Out- it’s what the cool kids call it anyway. According to a recent study, the average young adult spends more than a third of their waking day tweeting, Facebooking, Snap chatting and texting. It’s not surprising. Our smartphones make us masters at multi-tasking. It’s like a badge of honor, or is it? Turns out all that time spent on our cell phones is making us sick.
Did you know that in 2011 the World Health Organization classified cell phone or Radio Frequency (RF) Radiation as a “possible carcinogenic” in humans? The word “carcinogenic” means “cancer causing”. And if you go to the “Scientific Studies” page of this website, I have links to some of the hundreds of studies that link RF Radiation to cancer, and other ailments. And cell phones emit the same radiation your microwave oven uses to cook food. Even at the exact same frequency.

Before I get into how to protect yourself from cellphone radiation, I would like you to take a minute and watch this video below. In the video I actually test a both a smartphone and some Bluetooth earbuds so you can see how much RF Radiation they emit. You will be surprised. It is a short video but definitely worth watching!
And just this year the U.S. Toxicology Program revealed the results of a $25 million, 10-year study about the effects of cell phone radiation on rats and mice. Guess what those researchers found out? Cell phone radiation, like the kind you and I are exposed to for hours at a time a day (and night, let’s be honest) caused rare tumors to form in the heart tissue around male rats.
So, there’s that. It’s terrifying to think of all the health consequences we could soon be facing because of our need to add a filter to our favorite picture on Instagram. Some experts believe cell phone radiation is the tobacco of today and that we won’t fully know the consequences of the exposure until an entire generation is sick. Now, is the time to protect you and your family from the dangers of cell phone radiation. You can find more information about many of the below protection items on our page Recommended Protections.
How To Protect Yourself From Cell Phone Radiation
There are lots of simple steps you can take to protect yourself. Some of these suggestions involve changing your habits, others involve purchasing radiation protection cell covers and other guards. Let’s get started.
1. Use an Air Tube Headset
When making cell phone calls by far the safest way in an air tube headset. An Air Tube Headset is part air tube and half wired cable. It works similar to a doctor’s stethoscope. Air tube headsets convert the electrical signal into harmless airwaves. An air tube type hands free kit can reduce radiation significantly.. it’s much safer than blue tooth. This is by far the best option, if you can deal with the fact that they are a bit heavier. But you still need a ferrite bead. See my example in the below above.
2. Aulterra Neutralizer Sticker
The Aulterra Neutralizer Sticker is a product that has an surprising amount of science behind it. I go over all of the science in my article entitled “Aulterra EMF Neutralizer Products Review“. At first I wasn’t so sure about these types of products. I thought people that liked them must just be getting a placebo affect. My opinion changed when I started reading the scientific tests.
Kim Dandurand developed this technology in 1996 when he was engaged in a major environmental cleanup project where this technology was used to neutralize chemical and radioactive waste from landfill sites.
He then funded a bunch of studies to see if these same paramagnetic minerals would neutralize RF Radiation. What he learned was that they do 2 things. First they decrease the intensity of the radiation. And second they neutralize the effects of electromagnetic radiation rendering it harmless to human DNA.
3. Get an Alarm Clock
Did you know sleeping with your phone next to your head can cause headaches, nausea, insomnia, depression and even brain tumors? Yes, it can. I used to fall asleep every night with my phone on my nightstand but after all my research on this topic, I keep it far away. Experts recommend keeping your cell phone out of your room at night and switching to an old-fashion alarm clock for early morning wake up calls. You’ll sleep better and reduce your risk of major health complications.
Okay, let’s be realistic. If you can’t stand the thought of leaving your phone in another room at night, you have another option. I recently purchased a Wavecage to put my cell phone in at night. This cage is made out of stainless steel. It’s designed to reduce radiation exposure from cell phone radiation by about 90-95%. I’ve been using this cage for a couple weeks now and I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to keep their cell phone in the bedroom, but don’t want the added risks.
I still keep the cell phone up high on a dresser about 5 feet from my bed, just to be safe. So now I can use it as an alarm clock again. I love it. I highly recommend it. I have a link to the best place you can purchase a Wavecage and a bunch of the below other items also in my article entitled “50 Products To Protect Yourself From RF Radiation“.
5. RF Kill Box
Unlike the Wavecage, this kill box is solid metal. It’s designed to not allow any radiation out. This means if you put your cell phone in there, it will not ring and you won’t know If someone is trying to get ahold of you. It’s basically like turning of your phone, except it’s in metal box. This might be a good option if you want your phone close at hand, in case of a midnight emergency.
6. Get Rid of Bluetooth
A Bluetooth headset is designed to make hands-free calling easier than ever before. In many state, if you use your phone without a headset, you get a big fat ticket. Turns out Bluetooth headsets emit high levels of radiation directly into your ear. Yikes. Get rid of the Bluetooth all together- it’s not worth the risk. The safest solution is either a air tube headset or regular corded headset as long as you have a ferrite bead on the bottom of it. In this short video below I show you what a ferrite bead is, and how to put it on. It filters away 95% of the radiation going from your phone into your headset.
Putting distance between you and the phone lowers your exposure. Distance dissipates cellphone radiation. If you don’t want to purchase another headset, you can always put your phone on speaker and make a call like that. Several neurosurgeons have spoken publicly about how they tell their patients to keep the phone away from their head at all costs. In fact, some doctors don’t talk on their cell phones all together- they text.
While using the speakerphone option doesn’t eliminate the risk of radiation exposure it’s better than holding your phone directly to your brain. Several studies have shown that cell phone radiation can break the brain-blood barrier, which is the last line of defense in your body against toxic chemicals. The breaking of this barrier can make you more susceptible to tumors and other cancers.
8. Use Cell Phone Only With Good Reception
Can you hear me now? It seems like everywhere we go, we’re looking at our phones to see how many bars we have. Some experts believe bad reception, or fewer bars, on your phone means your phone is working harder to find a signal and in turn, emitting more harmful radiation. One article I read indicates “some phones can ramp up their emissions 1000-fold in areas where the signal is poor.
This means that for each signal bar that is missing, your exposure increases several hundred times,” electricsense.com. So, long story short if you’re in the mountains and you’re trying to upload that sunset picture to Instagram- take a break and enjoy the view. You can upload that pic once you get back to civilization.
9. No Phone For Kids
Okay, this is going to sound harsh but under no circumstances should you be giving your cell phone to your child for entertainment or to make a phone call. A child’s brain Is still developing and their skulls are much thinner than ours. This means they are more susceptible to RF radiation and the potential health effects that come along with this type of exposure.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been in a restaurant, only to see parents giving their kids cell phones to keep them entertained until their food arrives. I get that parents need a break- but it’s critical to your child’s health to take break from the cell phone.
10. Text, Don’t Call
In a recent article I read, a well known doctor said he never makes a phone call with his cell phone- he texts. The theory is this method of communication will greatly reduce your cell phone radiation exposure. However, texting still requires some level of energy and radiation is emitted during this process. I think this ideal for teens and young adults.
However, if you use your cell phone for business texting all your communication may be difficult. It’s worth a try! Perhaps email is a better way to go. You’ll have to experiment and decide which form of communication works best for your situation.
11. Ferrite Snap Beads
This is a cool product with great reviews. I haven’t picked up a set yet, but that may soon change. According to the manufacturer, when the ferrite snap beads are placed around the cable of a hands-free set, it reduces radiation in the cable and the exposure to you. The beads are made in two halves and you snap them around the cable. They are lightweight and from what I can tell they’re almost unnoticeable. According to Wikipedia, “ferrite beads employ high frequency current dissipation in a ferrite ceramic to build high frequency noise suppression devices.”
Well, you won’t win any fashion points with the this product, but it will keep you safe from cell phone radiation. The BlocSock is a softer, fabric version of the protective cell phone case I first mentioned in this article. It’s a pretty simple design that packs a punch when it comes to RF radiation protection. According to the manufacturer, the BlocSock cell protection case, blocks 96% of radiation. Plus, you can make a phone call with the cover on, which I think is pretty cool. Most of the other cell cases on the market are for storing your phone, not for making calls too. And for $35 a case, you can’t beat the price.
13. Cell Phone Bag
Earlier, I mentioned several metal containers to put your cell phone in at night. If a container isn’t for you, a cell phone bag may the ticket to keeping you safe. This bag is lightweight and made of a special metal mesh fabric, designed to block radiation. It’s used by military and law enforcement around the world. This is not very expensive and appears to be made very well and gets great reviews. I do a review on the one that I like the best in the video below. It is a short video but very worth watching. I have a link to the best place to purchase one of these bags on our Recommended Protections page of this website.
14. Defendershield & Safesleeve Products
Defendershield & Safesleeve Products allows you to take your cell phone and your wallet with you at the same time. According to the manufacturer, this specially designed product blocks 99% of radiation. The cases also come in a variety of colors and styles. In addition to keeping you safe from radiation, the case also protects your phone from dings and dents and general wear and tear. The protection cases come in a variety of shapes and sizes to fit most phones, tablets and laptops.
15. Get A Landline
Okay, I know this seems extreme but you could ditch the cell phone all together and dig that old landline out of the garage. Remember that yellow landline in your kitchen growing up? Yes, I’m talking about THAT one. Don’t be tempted to pick up cordless phone either because they give off way more radiation than you think.
Some experts say the base of a cordless phone is like having a cell tower in your living room. If you can, make phone calls from your landline. If you can’t get rid of your cell phone, try to limit the time you spend on your phone. It may take awhile to get used reducing your time on Facebook, but it’s worth it.
Reducing your exposure to cell phone radiation will not happen overnight. You have to make a conscious choice everyday how and when you will communicate with those around you. Maybe today you’ll text and make fewer phone calls. Tomorrow you can slowly transition your cell phone out of your room. While there are products out there designed to limit your exposure, it’s up to make it happen and utilize those resources. Change is hard, but when you’re health is at stake, it will be worth it. Let me know how it goes!
