You get that knock on your door from a person from your power company telling you that they are there to put a smart meter on your home. I know people who refused this so adamantly that they almost got in a physical altercation with them. I refused it and have not heard back from my power company and it has been around six months.
So exactly how dangerous are smart meters? The danger level of a smart meter depends on how powerful the RF Radiation signal is coming out of it. Some smart meters are very powerful and blast radiation through your entire house, as well as your parts of your neighbor’s home. Others only blast enough RF Radiation to be picked up in the room closest to the meter. So the greater RF Radiation emission, the greater the potential harm.
In this article we will first discuss a bit about smart meter radiation and what makes it dangerous. And then I will get into some very practical ways to both block and protect yourself from this type of radiation.
Smart Meter Radiation
A smart meter sends out blasts of up to 60,000 micro-watts per square meter of Radio Frequency (RF) Radiation (which is 60 times the U.S. safety limit) every 30 to 45 seconds, depending on how the specific power company has it set up. They also manipulate the AC current causing highly toxic “electric smog” (a.k.a. Dirty Electricity) on each electrical circuit the smart meter connects to.
Smart Meters are dangerous because they expose the occupants of the home or office to highly toxic amounts of RF Radiation and Dirty Electricity. And there are literally hundreds of independent peer reviewed scientific studies linking these “non-ionizing” forms of radiation to things like sleep disorders, tinnitus, cancer, exasperated diabetes, crib death, DNA damage (especially in infants and fetuses) and male infertility.
Some power companies around the United States have smart meter opt out programs. If you pay an extra fee every month, they will replace your smart meter with an analog meter that does not emit any RF Radiation. The fee is not typically very expensive. This is by far the best and safest option if you get your power from one of the power companies that will do this. Some people buy their own analog meter and have someone replace their smart meter. Smart Meter Guard
A Smart Meter Guard is a cover you can place over your smart meter made out of a conductive metal mesh screen that will block 90% to 95% of the RF Radiation that normally emits from the smart meter. It is highly effective, not very expensive and very easy to install.
In the below video I demonstrate one of these for you. First I measure the radiation coming out of the smart meter so that you can see how much they emit. Then I place a Smart Meter Guard over the meter and do the test again so that you can see the reduced amount being emitted. The video is short, but very informative. It is definitely worth watching. Dirty Electricity Meters & Filters
Graham-Stetzer Microsurge Meter is a meter that measures the dirty electricity on each circuit in your home. It is very simple to use. The Filters are plugged into circuits that read above the safety range and in most situations they reduce the “noise” or “smog” on the line back down to the safe range.
In the below video I do a quick test on one of the circuits in my home, and then show you how to place a filter on that circuit. I then take another reading so you can see the reduction. Again the video is short, but very informative. It is definitely worth watching. I highly recommend it.

Smart Meter RF Radiation Dangers
The most commonly thought of danger from a smart meter is the up to 60,000 micro-watts per square meter blast of RF Radiation they send out every 30 to 45 seconds. When the smart meter is on the outside of a bedroom wall, some people have noticed leg twitching and disturbance of the mind keeping one from sleep each time these blasts happen. That is how some people have figured out that the problem was originating from their smart meter.
Although RF Radiation is the most powerful form of EMF Radiation, because it is “non-ionizing” and typically does not heat up our bodies, some people (mainly those from government or the tech industry) claim that it cannot harm living organisms. However as I mentioned earlier there are just way too many independent peer reviewed scientific studies that say otherwise to ignore.
For example RF Radiation is in the microwave range of the electromagnetic spectrum, which ranges from about .8 or 1 GHz up to 300 GHz. Smart meters use the lower end of that range below 2.4 GHz because they are trying to transmit your electrical usage long distances (back to the power company or a nearby cell tower).
Barrie Trower is a highly respected British Physicist whose expertise is in microwave radiation. His career started when he was in the military where he learned how it can be used as a weapon, and studied its effects on the human body. In the below video he talks about his career and all of the harmful effects he saw from this type of radiation. It is about a 20 minute video but if you are interested in this topic it is very much worth watching.
Here is an interesting scientific study. It is not regarding radiation directly from a smart meter, but it is a test of similar frequencies of microwave radiation from a cell phone causing brain tumors. Similarly this radiation is shown in this study “Breast Cancer & RF Radiation” to women who kept their cell phones in their bras developing breast cancer from RF Radiation in the exact spot where they always kept their phones.

Here is an interesting article. It is not a study, but a Wikipedia article about the US Military’s microwave crowd control weapon called the “Active Denial System”. It disperses crowds by heating up their skins. This is a great example of the power to harm that these microwave frequencies have. US Military – Active Denial System.
And I could go on and on and list many more studies and articles talking about studies. There are no studies specifically on smart meter RF Radiation, but the radiation is the exact same as that coming out of other wireless or WiFi devices.
Here is a study that shows how this radiation causes DNA damage Oxidative Damage to Mitochondrial DNA. Smart Meter Misinformation
It is sad that the biggest source of misinformation regarding RF Radiation dangers come from government, technology, and technology industry funded sources. For example you would think a website like cancer.org, a website run by the “American Cancer Society”, would provide trustworthy information. But they don’t.
In their article entitled “Smart Meters” they say “Smart meters have not been studied to see if they cause health problems. Studies have looked at RF radiation from other sources. Exposure to large amounts of RF radiation, as from accidents involving radar, has resulted in severe burns. No other serious health problems have been reported.” They must get a lot of money from the technology sector to foment such blatant rubbish.
And as I already stated above, on the scientific studies page of this website there are links to peer reviewed studies that link this radiation to things like brain tumors, cancer, DNA damage, crib death, infertility and others.
Smart Meter Dirty Electricity Dangers
When a smart meter is connected to a home, it effects every electrical circuit in it, because it is connected to them all. And since a smart meter alters the normal AC current it creates electric smog or Dirty Electricity radiating through the walls from the electrical wiring of every circuit in the home.
With most homes I have seen the Dirty Electricity caused by a smart meter can be corrected by adding a filter (as I show in one of the videos above) to each circuit. You will want to test each circuit before and after with a Graham-Stetzer Microsurge Meter just to be sure however.

Smart Meters Replacing Analog Across USA
Well long gone are the days of your dog barking at the meter reader as he or she makes their monthly rounds in your neighborhood. It’s just you and your dog now. Peace and quiet, until you start to smell smoke. Not just any smoke. The pungent and nauseating aroma of wires burning. And then you hear the sirens. They’re getting louder and louder and suddenly the big red fire truck is right outside your door.
The smart meter on your neighbor’s brand new custom craftsman home caught fire and now their fancy garage is glowing orange with fire. Around the country, homes and businesses are catching fire from a new wave of technology promising lower electrical bills and provide more sustainable forms of energy. They’re called ‘smart meters,’ but there’s nothing intelligent about the high-tech devices. So there is no reason, no justification that smart meters have no adverse health effects,” said Dr. David Carpenter.
So, let me get this straight. A device designed to make our lives easier is actually causing us great harm? How can this be. How dangerous are smart meters again? It turns out, power customers across the country are protesting the smart meter program. There are lawsuits, public debate, hearings and outrage.
In an effort to gain momentum, people are sharing their stories online about their own changes in health after a smart meter was installed on their home. Concerned neighbors report a sudden increase in dizziness, ear pain, memory problems, heart palpitations, anxiety and sleep problems.
“Over the past two years, there has been mounting medical and scientific evidence of the grave biological dangers to humans from so-called “smart’ meters exposure,” said Dr. IIya Sandra Perlingieri, Global Research California.
RF Radiation Electro-Hypersensitivity
“What Is now termed Electro-Hypersensitivity and is recognizes in Sweden as a documented debilitating illness, can actually be called poisoning, as humans and all other living organisms are being damaged by these meters’ moment to moment RF pulsing rates,” said Dr. Perlingieri.
Smart meters emit the same type of radiation as cell phone, only more of it. So, if cell phones are a possible carcinogenic what does that mean for smart meters. You don’t have to be a genius to make the correlation.
“Tissue heating is the principal mechanism of interaction between radio frequency energy and the human body. At the frequencies used by mobile phones, most of the energy is absorbed by the skin and the other superficial tissues, resulting in negligible temperature rises in the brain or any other organs of the body,”- World Health Organization.
Remember, the level of radiation emitted from smart meters is equal to about 160 cell phones. So, if a single cell phone has the power to alter our tissue structure, just think what a smart meter is capable of. Phew. Hard to imagine such a device is attached to more than 70 million homes across the country.
A smart meter guard is designed to block radiation from entering your home an the environment. You don’t have to sacrifice our health for the benefit of big business. In many cities and states, you can opt out of the smart meter program all together.
Some power companies will charge you a fee to swap out your meter for an old school model. It’ll be worth it. Fido may be barking more at the power guy out your window. I’ll take that over radiation exposure any day of the week, wouldn’t you?
