People who are concerned about cell phone radiation often ask if land line phones also emit similar radiation. I think where the confusion arises is because a cell phone is an electronic device. All electronic devices emit 2 of the 3 forms of EMF Radiation, 1. electronic fields and 2. magnetic fields. However the only devices that emit the third type of EMF Radiation, RF (radio frequency) Radiation, are those electronic devices that communicate wirelessly.
Land line telephones do not give off RF Radiation because they do not communicate or send data wirelessly. And the voltage is so low with the electricity that a land line phone uses, that it gives off very little electric field and magnetic field EMF Radiation.
In this article I am going to talk a bit more about land line phones and RF Radiation. And I will compare a land line to a cordless phone and talk about where you can get a land line phone nowadays. Finally I will discuss why it is important to reduce your exposure to RF Radiation, and how having a land line phone will help with that.
Land Line Phones
You’ve done your research and you are probably trying to find ways to eliminate or reduce your exposure to RF radiation. I get it. To see other RF Radiation emitting devices in the average home, please see our article called “The 7 Worst Radiation Dangers In Your Home“.
By the way getting a landline phone does not mean you have to have a old phone like I have in the image for this article. I was just playing with that picture. Landlines can seem prehistoric to some of the younger generation nowadays. They have some awesome new landline phones you can purchase.
When I first started researching this topic, I tried to find every product and gadget to protect my family from the dangers of RF radiation. Turns out it takes a lot more than just a product to reduce your RF exposure, it takes time and discipline to change your habits.
If you’re like most people and are addicted to your devices, you’re not going to like what I have to say: ditch the cell phone, cordless phone and let’s go back in time to when landline phones were in every kitchen in America. Ready? Let’s go. We’re going way back. Grab your fanny pack and hairspray, because we’re taking a trip down memory lane.
Landline Phones and RF Radiation
If you really want to cut back on your RF radiation exposure, it needs to start with what you make phones calls on. Remember that nifty burnt orange landline phone you had in your kitchen growing up? Yep. That one. I had the same one. You know the one with the really, really, really long cord that was always twisted and tied in knots, but somehow still worked? Yep. That’s the one I’m talking about. Turns out that simple landline phone is the best thing you can do for your health!
Landline phones do not give off any RF radiation unlike cell phones and cordless phones. While it may not be a popular choice with your teenage kids, a landline in your home may just prevent your and your children from getting sick, a few decades down the road. Don’t be fooled by the cordless phones.
These are not true landline phones. Cordless phones, while connected to a phone jack in your house, emit more radiation than a cell phone. For the purpose of this article, we’re talking about phone connected to your phone jack and the mouthpiece of phone is connected by a cord to the actual base.
So why no RF radiation? It’s because this phone is only connected to the phone jack, not to the electrical outlet. No AC (alternating current) is required. A true landline (corded) does not require to be plugged into an electrical outlet and it doesn’t use any frequency to function. So, in turn there is zero RF radiation. What’s even better is your landline phone can work during an emergency because it does not require power to operate.
How many times has the power gone out at your home and suddenly you are down to one bar of battery power left? Yep. I’ve been there too. A landline not only reduces your overall household exposure to RF radiation, it gives you peace of mind when there is an emergency. I’ve read some articles where families have replaced all their cell phones with a landline in every room of the house. While, that may be a little drastic, it all depends on how much you want to limit RF radiation in your home.
Where Do I Even Get A Landline?
Great question! Turns out those old school landline phones are actually making a comeback in a big way. They are kind of like the bell bottom jeans of the 1960s and 1970s. Remember those? I don’t either. This “old is new” trend means landline phones are now easier and cheaper to find than ever before.
And as more people search for ways to reduce their RF radiation exposure, telephone companies are giving consumers more options! A quick search on Amazon and I was amazed to see all the colorful and simple options for a landline phone. The price range of a corded landline phone ranges from just $5 to $35 or so. You can even pick up an extra-long cord if you want to talk on the couch, but your phone jack is all the way in the kitchen.
I wish they had that when I was a kid. I remember being forced to talk to my best friend for hours at the dining room table because that’s the only place we had a phone jack. My parents could hear everything! Which, now that I think about it, was probably for my own good! I digress. Corded landlines are easy to find and fit most budgets.
Things to look for in a corded landline phone: cord length, size of the buttons and voice mail features. What’s really cool about landlines now, is that you can forward your cell phone calls to your landline to reduce your RF radiation even more.
Landline Vs. Cordless Phone
Do Landlines Give off RF Radiation? As I mentioned earlier, a landline phone is not the same as a cordless phone. Don’t be fooled. At first glance, some cordless phones look like landlines, but they are not. Yes, a cordless phone base connects to the phone jack, but it also requires power for the phone to communicate and send signals to the base. Some studies suggest cordless phones emit more radiation than a cell phone.
Having a cordless phone in your home is the same as having a small cell phone tower, smack dab in the middle of your living room. I highly doubt you would allow Verizon to lease a few square feet of rug space to build a cell phone tower? With a cordless phone you basically are. Yikes!
The World Health Organization recently classified radiation, like that from a cell phone and cordless phone as a possible carcinogenic in humans. The U.S. Toxicology Program just revealed the results of a $25 million study about the health implications of RF radiation in mice and rats.
In that 10-year study, researchers exposed rats and mice to RF radiation from cell phones. The study linked long term exposure to low levels of RF radiation to a rare form of cancer in the tissues of heart of male mice and rats. The groundbreaking study made headlines around the world. Some experts believe RF radiation is the big tobacco of modern day civilization.
So, what does that mean? It means companies making cell phones, WIFI routers, cordless phones and other high-tech devices will tell consumers their products are safe. But, research indicates those products are indeed very dangerous. Cordless phone emits more radiation than cell phones and should not be used in your home.
While there are ECO mode cordless phones, which reduce RF radiation exposure by about 80%, they are not as safe as the old school landline phone. When in doubt, choose a landline phone over a cordless phone. Your future self will thank you!
Why Reduce RF Radiation Exposure?
Choosing a landline phone over a cordless phone or cell phone may seem like a drop in the bucket when it comes to reducing your RF radiation exposure. It’s not. Think about how much time you spend on your cell phone? Five, ten hours a day? Maybe more? All that time on a cell phone means a lot of exposure to RF radiation.
Some studies link a dramatic rise in brain tumors on the side of the brain where a patient holds their cell phone. Another study I recently read indicated a five-fold risk to developing brain cancer and rare tumors in young adults who use cell phones in their childhood. Just think, if all that time on a cell phone was actually spent on a landline how the risk of developing a terminal illness would drop? I’m not saying a landline is the saving grace of all disease, but it eliminates your RF radiation exposure while talking to friends and family.
Every time you use your cell phone or cordless phone you are exposing your body to RF radiation which is known to have a thermal effect on the body. Some experts believe RF radiation can break through the blood brain barrier, which is the last line of defense against toxic chemicals for the body.
Breaking this barrier makes our bodies more susceptible to a host of disease and compromises our immune system. Here’s an interesting excerpt from an article on it-takes-time.com about why you should replace your cordless phone with a landline, corded phone:
“Dr. Magda Havas is one of the premier researchers on the adverse impact of DECT phones. In a petition calling on the Canadian government to ban DECT phones, Dr. Havas points to the growing evidence linking DECT phones with ill health. By superimposing her studies with others, Dr. Havas created the following graphic to show that, even from a distance of 3 meters, EEG brain waves are altered.
At 2.8 meters motor function, memory and attention of children are affected. At 1.7 meters, sleep is disturbed. How many people have DECT phones near their bed? At 30 cm memory is impaired and at closer distances the immune system is affected, REM sleep is reduced, insulin levels drop, and there are pathological changes in the blood brain barrier. Studies also show that there is 100% increase in adult leukemia between 45 and 130 cm from the phone and a similar increase in childhood leukemia between 35 and 260 cm.”
Dr. Magda Havas, along with other experts in the field believe eliminating this source of RF radiation will improve your quality of sleep, improved memory, concentration, decrease anxiety and improve your overall health.
RF radiation is everywhere. It’s an invisible threat to you and your family. Every time you heat up leftovers in the microwave, use that fancy washing machine and turn on your wireless computer you are exposed to RF radiation. Every time you call your mom in Maine on your cell phone, your increasing the potential for health risks down the road.
Using a corded landline phone is one piece of the puzzle to reducing your RF radiation exposure. If you can’t stand the thought of ditching your cell phone, try saving all your phone calls for a landline. A few minutes or even hours, here and there, really add up. Let’s do the math.
Let’s say you talk on the phone for 5 hours a week. That’s 260 hours a year! Make all those phone calls on a landline and that’s 260 fewer hours you are not exposing your brain and body to harmful RF radiation. Now that added up fast. Small steps and changes every day will make a big difference in 10, 15, 20 years from now.
Many experts in the study of RF radiation believe our civilization won’t full see and understand the effects of all this exposure for decades. I don’t want to wait that long to find out if my cordless phone was a bad idea? An author on NaturalHealth365.com makes the argument for landline phones in a recent article about the dangers of corded phones:
“That being said, it seems like putting up with a cord is a small price to pay for better overall and long-term health. Extremely long cords for landline phones are available, so you don’t have to be worried about being tethered to one portion of the home. Even better, corded phones don’t have batteries that lose their charge, so you’re free to talk as long as you like.
These simple measures – mentioned in this article – go a long way toward reducing stress in your life and the risk of disease. Why not make the effort?” Naturalhealth365.com.
Make the effort. It’s worth it. Plus, switching to a corded landline phone may inspire you to break out those high school yearbooks and take a trip down memory lane. Let me know if you notice a difference in how you feel!
