The 10 Best Negative Ion Bracelets 2023 – Plus Which Ones Are Not Safe!

Negative Ion Bracelets are becoming very popular today. People concerned with EMF Radiation use them in their fight against EMFs. And those into alternative forms of natural healing also extol their virtues.

So what are the best negative ion bracelets? Bracelets made out of single or multiple minerals that naturally give off negative ions such as Black Tourmaline, Amethyst and Obsidian, but that don’t produce the toxic ionizing radiation of some, are the best.

In this article first I will briefly explain what negative ions are and why many man-made so called “negative ion bracelets” are actually radioactive (seriously, no joke, the Geiger counters go “frantic”) and toxic. Then I will go through my list of the best, most helpful and the safest negative ion bracelets on the market currently.

What Is A Negative Ion?

A negative ion is simply an atom that has more electrons than protons. Since protons are positively charged and electrons are negatively charged, having more electrons than protons makes the atom negatively charged.

This negative charge makes them magnetically attract other negatively charged particles. That is why material that emits negative ions are used in things like dryer sheets and air filters.

Studies have shown that negative ions can react with body tissue and DNA in positive ways, aid cognitive ability, reduce stress and improve sleep and the body’s immune response. However I could not find any scientific studies that suggest that negative ions help protect us against EMF Radiation.

Are Silicon Wristband Negative Ion Bracelets Effective & Beneficial?

negative ion made in china

Some may be, if they really do contain negative ion emitting natural minerals and don’t contain toxic radioactive waste from things like mining. What!? Some negative ion wristbands are radioactive!? Apparently so.

In Yahoo News (I know, I don’t normally trust Yahoo News either) there is an article by Max Plenke entitled “Bad News: Those Popular Negative Ion Bands Are Secretly Sending Radiation Into Your Body“, where they interviewed a man named “Amal Graafstra”, who is the founder of the biohacking supply company called “Dangerous Things“. Amal took some of these silicon wristband negative ion bracelets and measured them with a Geiger counter and made a scary discovery.

To his surprise he found that these bands emitted ionizing radiation similar to what you would get from and x-ray machine. He said “in China, a product marketed as negative ion powder was being put in the negative ion wristbands, Graafstra told Mic. “It’s basically crushed-up radioactive waste from things like mining.”

He also said, based on the readings he took, “if you wore one of the tested wristbands for 24 hours, that’s like getting five dental X-rays in one day.” Below is a YouTube video of Amal measuring one of these bracelets.

But Amal Graafstra is not the only one to discover this. The Utah Department of Environmental Quality says on their website “Because the levels of naturally occurring radioactivity vary in the materials used in negative ion technology, products containing these materials will emit differing levels of radiation…The Nuclear Regulatory Commission recommends that individuals concerned about the effects of silicone wrist bands or K-tape containing negative ion technology should discontinue their use.”

So the key here is to use negative ion bracelets made of natural minerals that give off negative ions but that are not radioactive (do not give off ionizing radiation).

What Stones Produce The Most Negative Ions?

The three that produce the most negative ions, Black Tourmaline, Amethyst and Obsidian, also happen to be very well known for producing them. Black Tourmaline produces the most negative ions, then Amethyst and then Obsidian. They all also produce a natural occurring heat known as Far Infrared.

Let me first briefly explain what Far Infrared is, and why it is important in negative ion production. Then I will explain the qualities of Black Tourmaline, Amethyst and Obsidian.

Far Infrared

According to Wikipedia “Far Infrared (FIR) is a region in the infrared spectrum of electromagnetic radiation. Far infrared is often defined as any radiation with a wavelength of 15 micrometers (μm) to 1 mm (corresponding to a range of about 20 THz to 300 GHz), which places far infrared radiation within the CIE IR-B and IR-C bands.”

Far Infrared is a safe form of heat. It is considered the safest form of electromagnetic radiation that we receive from the Sun.

Stones like Black Tourmaline, Amethyst and Obsidian need pressure or heat to activate the process of emitting negative ions. The fact that these also emit Far Infrared is one of the reasons why they are so good at emitting negative ions.

Black Tourmaline

Black Tourmaline Stone

The most common stone that gives off negative ions is Tourmaline. Tourmaline is what is called a piezoelectric stone. This simply means that Tourmaline can generate an electrical signal when exposed to heat or when under some sort of pressure or strain.

A Tourmaline stone also produces far infra-red radiation. In addition Tourmaline is a pyroelectric stone. This  means that temperature changes can also generate a weak electric current within the stone. These are the characteristics that are believed to convert moisture from the air into natural and safe negative ions. Having all of these characteristics is why Tourmaline is the most popular negative ion producing stone. This is why I have selected Tourmaline bracelets as my top negative ion bracelet picks.

Amethyst Crystals

Amethyst is another natural stone that is believed to produce negative ions similar to that of Tourmaline. Amethyst also produces far infrared radiation and is both a piezoelectric and pyroelectric stone.

Obsidian is another natural stone that is believed to produce negative ions similar to that of Tourmaline and Amethyst. Obsidian also produces far infrared radiation but it is not a piezoelectric and pyroelectric stone.

Other stones that give off negative ions are things like Jade, Obsidian, Titanium, Germanium, and Zeolite.

1. Black Tourmaline Bead Bracelet

Black Tourmaline

Please note that as I am ordering these bracelets my number one concern is their ability to produce negative ions, however style and design (based on my personal opinion) played a secondary roll. There are enough pros and cons to each that you will really need to go through each and decide which is best for you. Okay lets get started with this bracelet!

This Black Tourmaline Bead Bracelet is my first pick for no other reason than it is solid Black Tourmaline, the strongest negative ion material. And the beads are fairly good sized, which I like. The more Black Tourmaline, the better.

One other thing that I thought was kind of cool is that they are hand made; they have you measure your wrist with a string as you order so that they can make the bracelet to fit your wrist. There is nothing worse than getting a piece of jewelry that doesn’t fit. You don’t have to worry about that with this piece.

Black Tourmaline is also known as both a grounding and protection stone. It is used for shielding, and/or the removal of unwanted energy.

2. Black Tourmaline Tumbled Stone Bracelet

Black Tourmaline 2

This Black Tourmaline Bead Bracelet is was almost my first pick. One because it is also solid Black Tourmaline. And 2 I really like the non round tumbled stone look. And the beads are fairly good sized, which I like. They are even a bit larger than the other bracelet. Like I said the more Black Tourmaline, the better.

The reason I placed this one in second place is because even though I may really like the tumbled stone non round look, I thought it might be less popular than the traditional round beads, for a bead bracelet.

Either way though you can’t really go wrong as far as negative ions go. With these beads being a bit larger you get a bit more of the negative ion material.

3. Adjustable Black Tourmaline Bracelet

Black Tourmaline Adjustable Bracelet.

Okay I just had to add one more classy looking Black Tourmaline bracelet. Obviously since Black Tourmaline is the best stone for negative ions we have a few of them here on the top of my list.

What I like about this one besides its aesthetics was the fact that it is adjustable. That is a nice feature in case multiple people want to share it and it can make it easier sometimes to take it on and off depending on how snug you like to wear bracelets.

Like the other two this one says it is hand made. It is solid Black Tourmaline, built well and the beads are decent size. These beads come from Bazile, like a lot of Black Tourmaline does.

4. Black Tourmaline and Amethyst Bracelet

Black Tourmaline and Amethyst bracelet.

Okay for our 4th bracelet I picked this beautiful mostly Black tourmaline with about a third Amethyst bracelet. There are also a couple of clear quarts beads on the bracelet as well.

This one gives you plenty of negative ion producing ability with it having both solid Black Tourmaline and solid Amethyst stones. The size of the beads are decent sized and the quality of the bracelet is good.

It gives a nice variety from the earlier stones, which I think ads to the bracelet’s beauty. Now let’s take a look at some very nice Amethyst bracelets. It is said that Amethyst soothes irritability, relieves stress and strain, balances mood swings and dispels anger!

5. Amethyst Bracelet

Handmade Natural Amethyst Bracelet

This beautiful natural Amethyst Bracelet I think would make anyone happy. Again the stones are decent sized, and they are solid Amethyst.

One thing I really like about stones like Amethyst is how it comes with different shades of purple color, some darker and some lighter. This is a very classy bracelet that looks like it costs more than it does.

It also didn’t say if it is handmade, but you select the size which may mean that they make each one to suit. I did find it in the handmade section of Amazon, so it should be. Either way it is good quality and very beautiful.

6. Grade Dark Amethyst Bracelet

Grade Dark Amethyst Bracelet

Wow! I really think Amethyst is beautiful. What I like about this solid Dark Amethyst Bracelet is how dark and rich the purple color is. It looks like it is fit for royalty. Okay maybe I am being a bit dramatic, but I really like the way these Amethyst bracelets look.

This one also says it is handmade, and again you have to measure your wrist to make sure they get you the correct fit. Again this one is built well and uses quality stone.

With any of the Amethyst bracelets you are going to have plenty of negative ion production. Amethyst is known for its negative ion production.

7. Amethyst and Obsidian Bracelet

Amethyst and Obsidian Bracelet

Now this Amethyst and Obsidian Bracelet is also beautiful. I like the fact with this one too that it’s size is adjustable. I couldn’t find anywhere it saying that it is hand made. The closest I found is that it says it is a “Unique Handcraft”, which may mean it is handmade. And I found it in the handmade section of Amazon.

But either way the quality is good. Both the Amethyst and Obsidian beads are solid and of good quality.

With a full band of Obsidian and a full band of Amethyst, I don’t think you can go wrong on its negative ion production.

8. Black Obsidian Bracelet

Black Obsidian Bracelet

You may not be able to tell in the picture of this Black Obsidian Bracelet but these beads are a bit larger than normal, 10mm. Again I like that because the more of the negative ion producing stone that you have, the more negative ions (in theory) it will produce. Obsidian doesn’t produce as much as Amethyst or Black Tourmaline, but it is known for producing negative ions.

This one again says that it is hand made, and you do get to select the size based on your wrist measurements. The beads are solid Black Obsidian stone of very nice quality. Black Obsidian is also known for its calming influence. It is also said to even out mood swings, soothe irritability, and relieve stress.

9. Black Obsidian 8mm Bracelet

Black Obsidian 8mm Bracelet

Okay as I list in the above title these beads in this Black Obsidian Bracelet are still decent in size, 8mm. They are not the 10mm size of the previous Black Obsidian bracelet, but you have twice as many. And this bracelet is adjustable to boot!

Again this one is said to be handmade, which is nice. And the Obsidian is of a very good quality. For me personally the two adjusting strings hand down too long for my taste, but I know one of my daughters really likes things like that on her jewelry. So it is just a matter of personal taste.

The main thing for here is it is a well built bracelet for the money and the Obsidian is good quality.

10. Black Obsidian & White Selenite Crystal Bracelet

Black Obsidian & White Selenite Crystal Bracelet

This Black Obsidian & White Selenite Crystal Bracelet is last on my list only because it has the least amount of negative ion producing stone of any of these bracelets. But it is very beautiful and a great quality bracelet.

White Selenite “is said to be a powerful healing crystal that promotes peace and calm, mental clarity, and well-being“. My wife is really into energy healing and especially loves rocks. So I am always hearing about what different stones do lol.
