The whole reason that we get a baby monitor is to keep our baby safe. Our natural parental instinct is to keep an eye and ear on our child to make sure they are okay. But could the very device we purchased to keep our precious baby safe, actually be putting them in harm’s way? If so that is a scary thought. Let’s delve into it.
Video baby monitors can be safe if you have the right kind, and if you secure it properly. If not they can be very dangerous. The two main risks video baby monitors pose that endanger you and your children are first, the Radio Frequency (RF) Radiation that they emit, and second, how easy it is for deviants to see our children sleeping in their cribs. The first exposes our children to cancer causing radiation which could kill or permanently harm them. The second allows hackers or bad guys driving through our neighborhoods to see what we are seeing on our baby monitors. Neither are good.

Strangers Watching Your Baby
Let’s discuss the second problem first, other people having the ability to see and monitor our children without our permission. In the video below it shows an ABC News report where a stranger hacked into their baby monitor and threatened to kidnap the baby. The video will shock you. I highly recommend you taking a couple of minutes to check it out.
There have also been news reports where the news team took a baby monitor video receiver that used a common frequency and drove through a neighborhood and could watch many of the neighbors babies in the cribs. Each time they found one, they knocked on the door of the home and showed the parent how they could be on the street and view their baby in its crib. It freaked out the parents and many said that they were going to get rid of their video baby monitors.
Someone who wanted to abduct children could literally watch babies in their cribs in neighborhoods and pick out the one that they want to abduct. Then they could case the house and pick an ideal time to break in a bedroom window kidnap the child. The possible scenarios are quite scary. Hackers who hack into a baby monitor often hack into the home WiFi first and access the baby monitor from there. If they can hack into your home WiFi, especially in smart homes with interconnected systems, they could know what times of day your are not home as well should they want to rob you.
Before we leave this topic of hackers and bad people being able to use your baby monitor to view your infant without your permission, let’s talk about how to protect yourself. There are ways to protect yourself too, like changing from the factory password to a complicated hard to hack password. You also will want to review the various models of baby monitors to see which are the most secure from hackers. And watch for updates for your baby monitors on the manufacturer’s websites because they often update with more security as time goes on. So educate yourself so that you can make the best decisions possible.
RF Radiation Dangers
If you were tending your infant while you were cooking dinner for your family, would you set your baby in a baby chair, on the counter right next to the microwave oven while you were cooking food? Most parents I ask that question to seem horrified at the thought, and adamantly insist that they would not. And these are usually parents who believe it is safe standing in front of the microwave oven while it is running. They still would not set their baby right next to a microwave oven just in case.
And it is good that they would not put their child close to a microwave oven. I have tested several microwave ovens while cooking. The radiation that escapes and leaks out of them pegs my meter. It leaks more RF Radiation than my meter will even read.
Yet these same parents will stick the latest digital video baby monitor that uses regular WiFi or Bluetooth in their child’s bedroom near them and not think anything of it. Both WiFi and Bluetooth emit the exact same RF Radiation as the typical microwave oven. And Bluetooth and WiFi baby monitors also peg my meter when I test them. They emit more RF Radiation than my meter can read.
The below video is one of a series of videos where I went room by room through a home and tested every room for RF Radiation and Dirty Electricity. This video is of the little boy’s room which had a baby monitor. In this video you will see that it maxed out my meter from the door way before I got very far into their room. Seeing is powerful. This video is short but very much worth watching. I highly recommend it.
These baby monitors even emit the same frequency RF Radiation as a microwave oven. (In the RF Radiation world, the higher the frequency, the more dangerous it is to living organisms.) A WiFi or Bluetooth baby monitor uses 2.4 GHz and 2.45 GHz RF Radiation frequencies respectively. A microwave oven uses 2.45 GHz RF Radiation frequency to cook your food. The wattage used is different, but WiFi and Bluetooth use the exact same radiation as your microwave oven.
(Note: I know from experience that many people reading this article will still choose to buy a baby monitor. If you do please first look over the examples of lower emission baby monitors I show in the latter half of my article “7 Examples of Low Emission Baby Monitors“. Those baby monitors that are safer than most. Also, the dangers of RF Radiation are now starting to be more widely known. Because of this there are companies starting to come out with items that can protect you from common sources of RF Radiation, such as baby monitors, WiFi Routers, Smart Meters, cellphones etc. You can see a description of many of these items, and the best places to get them on the Recommended Protections page of this website.)
Peer Reviewed Scientific Studies
There are literally hundreds of peer reviewed scientific studies from more than 40 different countries that link RF Radiation to things like cancer, sterility in men, DNA damage both adults as well as in the eggs of women, and even crib death. The World Health Organization, which I personally am no fan of, was finally forced to classify RF Radiation as a possible “carcinogenic”. Expert On Microwave Radiation
Barrie Trower is a British Physicist who was first trained by the British Royal Navy on microwave military weapons. He then spent the rest of his career as a Physics professor studying microwave radiation. In the below video he talks about the different harm that RF or microwave radiation causes in the human body. He gets into topics like crib death, DNA damage, particularly in female fetuses, and cancer. He is an expert. The video is only about twelve minutes long. It is really worth watching.
One of the most frustrating thing about studying this topic is how many people there are that won’t do their research and refuse to believe that there is a danger. When I first started reading the findings of these studies and learning these things, I began showing them to friends and family. Some showed interest and would read the findings themselves, others would laugh and scoff and say things like “if that were true the government would not let them sell these items”.
I say this to say that if you are skeptical at all, then please do your own research. Read the actual studies for yourself. The “Scientific Studies” page of this website has links to some of them, and talk about how to find and read hundreds more. Its a good place to start. But please do not be one of those people who are intentionally ignorant. People like that actually think they know better, but won’t actually do their own research.
What Is RF Radiation?
When normal AC Electric fields and AC Magnetic fields approach higher frequencies, the fields become airborne becoming Radio Waves. This is electromagnetic radiation. RF Radiation is electromagnetic radiation. If you look at the below chart, the “Radio waves” and “Microwaves” sections of the below Electromagnetic Spectrum chart is what is called “Radio Frequency Radiation” or “RF Radiation” for short.
Within the RF Radiation portion of the spectrum, the higher the frequency (or the shorter the wave length) the more dangerous it is to us. This is not necessarily true within the infrared and visible light sections of the spectrum. But then it gets really dangerous as you get up into the X-rays and Gamma-rays section of the spectrum.
Here is an interesting “fun fact” about the electromagnetic spectrum. The bottom end of the spectrum, which is radio waves, begins where electric and magnetic fields reach a high enough frequency that they become airborne. That is how radio waves are created.
Safe Baby Monitors
Knowledge is power. Ignorance can seem like bliss but can have dangerous consequences. As my wife always says “I would rather know”. A baby monitor can be a very handy thing, but if it risks the security, health or life of your infant is it worth it?
That being said a baby monitor can be used in ways that they do not harm your infant. There are very low frequency models as I show in the latter half of my article “7 Examples of Low Emission Baby Monitors” that use 49 MHz frequency. 49 MHz is a lower frequency even that FM radio is. Baby monitors that use the 49 MHz frequency are safe. At that frequency it is just normal radio waves.
The image on the left is one is the Safety 1st Crystal Clear Audio Monitor. It is a baby monitor that emits only 49 MHz frequency. It is the one that I would get. There are other manufactures that offer 49 MHz baby monitors but they are getting harder and harder to find. I have links to where you can buy this baby monitor in the “7 Examples” article I link to above.
Safe Video Baby Monitor
The only real way to have a safe video baby monitor is to hard-wire in your baby monitor. What I mean by hard-wire is to use Ethernet or fiber optic computer cables. Never use any device that tries to transmit the signal over the normal electrical wiring in your home because this is just trading one harmful radiation for another. Doing so causes dirty electricity. See an example of what not to do in the video below!
However if you hard wire a microphone and a video camera using computer cables into your computer network, then you can create your own video monitor that does not emit RF Radiation. You will still want to secure your computer network so that hackers can’t find it and access the monitor.
Other Ways To Protect Against RF Radiation
My recommendation is to either not have a baby monitor or to get an analog one that uses the 49 MHz frequency. If for some reason you choose a higher frequency baby monitor (like 200 MHz or higher) then you will want to protect yourself and your infant as I will show you in this section. The first thing that you want to do is to reduce the amount of RF Radiation that reaches you or your little ones.
To do this your baby monitor needs to be surrounded (except from above) in a conductive metal mesh of some sort. RF Radiation does not travel well through a conductive metal mesh. In the images on both the left and right of this paragraph I show you examples of what I am talking about. These are both metal mesh baskets that I have tested with a meter and know how well they work. The image on the right is a picture of a Steel Mesh Waste Basket I purchased. The image on the left is called the Steel Mesh Condiment Caddy. On the “Cellphone Radiation Protection Items” page of this site I have links to the best place to purchase both of these.
The idea here is that you want to place both the sending and receiving units of your baby monitor in baskets like this. You want to top open so that enough signal escapes to make sure your baby monitor functions properly. But you want the walls high enough, and the basket set higher than your baby’s body, so that enough of the RF Radiation is blocked. You also want to set the baskets at least 5 to 6 feet away from you and your baby.
I filmed myself testing these with a meter so that you can see exactly how well they work. You can see this video of me testing these baskets in the video below. You will notice in the video that some of the baskets I tested work better than others. The size as well as the how conductive the metal is makes a difference.
If you don’t use one of the baskets I show in this video then you will want to test the one you do get with a meter so you know how well it works. It is a really good idea to get a couple of good meters too because there are a lot of other RF Emitting Radiation sources in your house as well. Anything WiFi as well as things like a smart meter all emit high amounts of RF Radiation.
Plus there is something called “electromagnetic smog” also known as “dirty electricity”. Believe it or not this is also carcinogenic and is a form of harmful electromagnetic radiation that emits from the wiring in the walls of your home. On that page I go over 3 different meters, their pros and their cons. They are the meters that I like. However as far as with the metal mesh baskets above, if you stick to the ones I test in the above video you know that they will work if you keep them above yours and your baby’s body and at least 5 to 6 feet away.
Out of all of the things in our lives that expose us to RF Radiation the one that makes me truly the saddest is a baby monitor. Our infants are our most vulnerable and most easily damaged by RF Radiation. They are smaller and there bodies are still forming. And as we learned in the Barrie Trower video above, they are the most likely to experience DNA damage. If there is anyone we need to make sure is protected and safe, it is our little ones.
